If you’re still young enough to remember your birthday, you probably also remember the special birthstone assigned to it. But at your age, we bet you don’t really know the SIGNIFICANCE of your birthstone and what power the ancients felt would be bestowed about you by wearing it.

March Birthstone: Aquamarine
Birthstone Properties: Bestows courage, insight, and victory
Alternative Birthstone: Bloodstone

Aquamarine is the traditional birthstones for March. It is also the accepted anniversary gem for the 19th year of marriage. Aquamarine is mined primarily in Brazil, Nigeria and Zambia.

Water Baby

Created by combining Latin words for water (aqua) and sea (mare), aquamarine does indeed resemble the bottomless blue of seawater. Like Emerald, aquamarine is a variety of beryl (a mineral that crystallizes within large rocks on the earth’s crust).

Aquamarine varies in color from blue-green to a light sky blue, and for generations, those stones containing green are often heat-treated to remove this less desirable color. Surprisingly, unlike other coveted gemstones, the majority of aquamarines are flawless. As a gift, aquamarine is unsurpassed in its legendary abilities to preserve and enhance mutual love, to ensure truth in relationships and to maintain a good marriage

When In Rome…

Ancient Romans believed the magnificent gemstone was sacred to Neptune, the god of the sea. Some legends say that it was gift from mermaids, while others suggest that Neptune retrieved it after it fell from the jewel boxes of sirens and washed onto shore. Early sailors wore aquamarine talismans, engraved with the likeness of Neptune, as protection against dangers at sea.

The association with water led to the belief that the Aquamarine was particularly powerful when immersed. Water in which this gemstone had been submerged was used in ancient times to heal a variety of illnesses of the heart, liver, stomach, mouth and throat. Aquamarines were also used to reverse poisoning and to aid in fortune telling.

Heal Me

Many believe that aquamarine helps dependence on drugs, is an aid in digestion, and can be used as remedy for swollen glands and to maintain the health of the jaws and teeth.

On the non-physical plain, aquamarine is believed to release anger and negativity replacing them with mental peace and clarity, providing emotional and mental balance. It has been used as an aid in meditation and to assist in self-expression.

A Gift of Love

To dream of aquamarine signifies the making of new friends. To wear aquamarine brings love and affection. To give aquamarine is to offer the gift of knowledge, foresight and individual inspiration. It is a universal symbol of youth, fidelity, hope and health.

Ideal for carving into cameos and beads, the “blue sea” stone is said to aid seafarers so it is a wonderful gift for sailors, fishermen, and everyone who spends time at sea. A a gift of aquamarine symbolizes safety and security, especially within long standing relationships.

Caveat Emptor (Buyer beware): The beautiful light blue to blue-green color of aquamarine may fade upon prolonged exposure to light, so it is especially important to purchase this gem from a reputable source.

The International Art and Antiques opened last week at the Olympia Exhibition Hall, Kensington, west London and continues until 15 June. I attended, as I do every year, excited, hoping to find some small treasure. My interest is Chinese art and antiques, which I bought and sold, and collected for over thirty years. I try to visit most of the Art and Antiques fairs in the UK and some in Europe and the U.S. each year.

From a point of view of Chinese art Olympia was a disappointment for me. Although I have seen some interesting pieces, the objects would have liked to buy were too expensive or restored. He was resigned to leave empty-handed. Not only empty-handed, disappointed, because he had been very touched by what he had seen and I had walked miles. Exhausted, I went to a coffee shop.

Unable to find a seat in the cafeteria, I sat on a long bench in front of a stall silver. Although occasionally buy Chinese silver to sell, I've never been interested in collecting silver, always seeing that it was too bright and need lots of attention to keep it that way. Rarely look at silver dealers stands, but as I drank my coffee, I looked at the objects this dealer was sold and realized quickly that many were much more than silver. Gold, silver vases, jars and large covered cups that looked like pineapples mingled with religious objects: a golden monstrance, a rock crystal cross and various reliquaries. No such items were common and were all eighteenth century or earlier.

The man raised the sale of these articles various elements of the cabinets, cheerfully, giving information in excellent English with an accent that does not. I looked at the name on the stand: Peter Szuhay – B59.

Somebody asked the price of a beautiful rhino horn cup with a foot gilded silver. I know nothing about European rhinoceros horn of the factory art, so when the potential buyer of the left and I had finished my coffee, I asked Mr. Szuhay if he would show him to me.

We talk about the cup, now standing between us at the top of a glass window full of jewels and I find that Mr. Szuhay is Hungarian, has lived in London for more thirty years and has a permanent stand in Grays Antique Market Davies Street in London's West End, near Bond Street station underground. He is an expert in silver continental and artwork. He showed me the money to start several beautiful pieces, mentioning the famous towns of Augsburg and Nuremberg, of which, including a dealer Chinese art has heard. It also has an interest in the later silver and he showed me some 19th century Russian silver and a magnificent 20th century silver fish server by Scandinavian master silversmith, Georg Jensen.

I realized that what I had initially dismissed as jewelry, in the window below the cup, was actually a series of beautifully carved stone cameos and carvings. I'm used to seeing shells carved into portraits, mounted in brooches, usually from Italy and dating from the middle nineteenth century until very recently, but these pieces were very different and very exciting.

By now we were on first name terms and Peter showed me a selection of these carved stones, dating from the late nineteenth century back to Rome in the third century. Exquisite little works of art, some signed by master sculptors sixteenth century. We were interrupted and while Peter sold a Chinese silver box, which had not even account was there and walked to the other side of the booth, where he Jewelry showcase second.

Here was showing, what looked like a group of much more common gold signet rings. But when she turned talk to me again, Peter put me straight. They were actually English Medieval rings of gold and silver. Some were signet rings others were guild rings or rings iconography, used by pilgrims and etched with icons of San Cristobal, etc. There Posy rings XVI and XVII century: mostly plain gold bands bearing sentiments recorded around inside the ring, in Olde English. This was an area of collection had never considered. I've never had much interest in jewelry as decoration, but the Pedro jewelry was much more than that – it was sculpture, design and artwork and everything had a story and an accompanying story. These small masterpieces were a revelation to me.

Do not buy anything from Peter Szuhay in Olympia, although it made my day and gave me something to write. However, the promise I made to visit his shop in Grays Antique Market and I, and I'm sure I'm going to buy something from him soon. Peter also offers a selection of shares in: target = "_blank"> www.peterszuhay.co.uk
